Five Questions About Concrete Work in Bloomingdale Answered
As Bloomingdale’s premier landscaping and hardscaping contractor, Selvin's Landscaping Inc. gets a lot of questions from our clients about concrete work. Many home and business owners are interested in using the reliable durability of concrete to accent their yards and decks. But most people don’t have experience working with concrete, and so they want to know more about it before they commit to this elegant and stylish material.
Here are five questions our customers asked us about concrete work and hardscaping in the last year—check ‘em out!
1. What is Concrete?
The Ancient Romans were the first to use concrete as a building material. Concrete mixes a binding agent—cement—with tiny crushed stones or sand. As the cement hardens, the concrete changes from a soft paste into a tough and stiff material. Concrete became popular again in the 18th century, and builders have been using it ever since for its versatility and affordability.
2. How is Concrete Poured?
We usually pour concrete out of a stand concrete mixer, but we can also pour it out of a truck. It’s assembled right before it’s poured because the mixture hardens pretty quickly.
After it’s poured into the space that needs filling, your concrete worker will smooth out the surface. If you’re doing it yourself, make sure there are no bubbles or gaps in the poured material.
3. What is Concrete Flatwork?
Concrete flatwork is any concrete that’s filled on a horizontal plane. It includes driveways, walkways, and patios. That’s most of the concrete work that we do at Selvin's Landscaping Inc.! Vertical overlays are possible but are a lot more complicated, so you’ll want to ask a hardscape specialist with the experience necessary to handle that job.
4. Can You Do Concrete Work During Winter?
The issue with pouring concrete in the winter is that the cement sets more quickly during warm temperatures. It’s absolutely possible to do concrete work in the winter, but it presents a bunch of challenges.
Firstly, the area needs to be completely cleared to pour and set concrete successfully. During the bitter Bloomingdale winters and after a major snowstorm, this might be harder than you’d like.
It’s also crucial that nothing disturbs the concrete as it sets. Luckily, most people won’t be running around outside, so the odds of them landing a foot in your new patio are lowered!
Selvin's Landscaping Inc. is happy to try concrete work for your hardscaping needs no matter what season it is. However, we do recommend you do your concrete jobs in the summer if possible!
